Tour the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier

Prepare yourself and seven of your closest friends for an adventure on board the USS Hornet moored at Pier 3, Alameda Point, in Alameda, California. The Captain’s Tour covers much of the historic ship and includes a catered lunch in the Admiral’s Wardroom with a presentation of the history of the Hornet.

The tour will be conducted by US Navy Veterans. They will be able to explain many aspects of life on a navy ship, discuss naval operations during the service life of the Hornet, and describe the functions of the areas and many compartments visited during the approximately five hours of touring.

The Hornet is almost 900 feet long and has 18 levels or decks, of which you will visit 13. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes! You will go into dozens of different compartments large and small whose functions cover everything from the mundane food preparation areas to the massive engine and fire rooms to the command and control spaces such as Combat Information Center and the Captain’s bridge.

You will learn everything from how to catapult a plane off the deck to discovering the complexities of the steam-driven propulsion system.

Your learning adventure continues during the lunch hour in the Admiral’s wardroom. There, while enjoying your catered lunch on the officer’s chinaware, we will conduct a presentation and discussion on the history of the Hornet and her predecessors.

This once in a lifetime experience can only be won at the Live Auction at this year’s “Evening of Sparkles” fundraising event on May 19, 2012 at the Newark Hilton. Get your tickets today for this event at www.eveningofsparkles.org.

The Rotary International Foundation

Recently every member of our club who has been with us over a year received an updated Paul Harris Fellow Pin. Every person receiving a pin is now a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. This was made possible due to each of us receiving credit for our huge polio gift from our fundraiser.

The pins have meaning. For example, each sapphire on the pin represents a $1,000 contribution above the original PHF pin. Once a member has contributed a total of $7,000 the stone becomes a ruby and at the $10,000 level one receives the Paul Harris Lapel Pin.

Each member received a minimum credit of $2,106 to their account which in regular giving would be a PHF plus $I,000. Many of the members now have enough recognition credit to honor a special friend or family member with an honorary Paul Harris award. It takes just 1,000 recognition points to give the award to someone you feel is worthy of this honor. A member can do this on the website of RI or give me their info and I will happily complete the paperwork. I have given everyone their number of points and some of us could honor multiple persons if we so choose.

On another subject, our annual giving to RI is kicked off in November and our goal is $200 per member or $5000 for the club as a whole. Giving is a very personal decision and each member must work within his or her budget to give the most they are able to afford. Remember if we started now, all one would have to do is allocate $5 per week and prior to the end of May 2012 you would meet your $200 gift pledge.

This is the only way Rotary is able to fund and allocate DDF for global grants and local projects.

Hope this helps you understand just a little more about the process.

FREMONT WARM SPRINGS SUNRISE ROTARY DONATES LARGEST AMOUNT TO POLIO

District Governor, Roger Hassler accepting check from President, Mike Kearns

On Monday, April 25th, Mike Kearns, President of the Fremont Warm Springs Sunrise Rotary Club presented to District Governor, Roger Hassler, a $52,668.61 check to Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign.  On March 26th, the club held their premier event, “An Evening of Sparkles” where they raised funds for Polio.

In a Rotary District that has clubs numbering well over 100 members upwards of 450 members,  the ability for a club with only 25 members to raise the largest amount in the District for Polio is a tremendous effort.  In Roger’s words, “That is a club that got off their ask.”  Congratulations on a job well done!

An Evening of Sparkles Was A Huge Success!

“An Evening of Sparkles”

Fremont Warm Springs Sunrise Rotary’s “An Evening of Sparkles” was a Huge Success! It was the Party to attend. The general consensus was ”the evening was so much fun”, “not your typical Rotary event, better”, “great Live Auction”, “a fabulous fashion show”, “we want to talk to you and put together an event like this!”

Thank you to all who attended. We were able to raise over $50,000 for Rotary International’s End Polio Now Program. Every dollar donated puts us that much closer to eradicating Polio, a worthy cause!

Teen Challenge was our Fund For Need organization for the event. Again, thru your generous donations we raised over $7,000 to help Teen Challenge continue to help people who have life-controlling problems. The Teen Challenge approach is to teach a whole new way of living by addressing family relationships, work attitudes, self-image and esteem, peer pressure, addictions, social issues, community relationship, and a variety of other life skills. Teen Challenge endeavors to help people become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive. Teen Challenge is regarded as one of the most successful drug rehabilitation programs.

Monies also raised that evening will go to fund Fremont Warm Spring Sunrise Rotary’s other beneficiaries as well. Past beneficiaries have been Life ElderCare, SAVE, ABODE, High School Scholarships to mention just a few.

We would like to thank our sponsors again for their generosity: Randall and Cynthia Pond, Mario and Luciana Mazzola, Michael Bryne, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Jeboy and Karen Koshy, Fremont Warm Springs Sunrise Rotarians, Dave Clayton, Farmer’s Insurance, Michael Kearns, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Washington Hospital, Greg and Betsy Bogdanoff and Andrew Miceli, Mass Mutual Financial Group.

Thank you to our Fashion Show sponsors: Avalon Spa and Salon, Bay Jewelers, Errienne, Mens Wearhouse and Jessica McClintock.

Save Fremont Students

Christina Broadwin, mother and parent of three, became involved in 2010 with the grass root campaign, “Save Fremont Students.” School budgets were being drastically reduced. With 32,000 students in the Fremont Unified School District, a 25 million shortfall was announced. This meant that all music, art, science and PE teachers would be laid off and programs lost, the 20-1 classroom ratio would be increased to 30-1 in elementary schools and class size increasing to 35-40 students in high schools. The parents in the district felt this was unacceptable and decided to start a campaign to raise 4.5 million by July 15, 2010. The group first met over Memorial Day weekend, 2010, two weeks before school was to end, to discuss how they were going to accomplish this.
All the schools in the district participated, teachers, parent and students were involved and the campaign was endorsed by the School Board and the Fremont Education Foundation. A donation of $475 per family was being asked. After much research through the Bay Area, they discovered that other school districts who also asked for donations to cover shortfalls, asked for an average of $300 per family. Families were allowed to designate if they wanted their wanted their donation to go to the elementary, junior high or high school level.
They had multiple donation streams, alumni, future families, small and medium size businesses, current families and corporate matching grants. They had rallies, held flea markets, Shop for Students Day at certain local stores, set up donation tables around the city. They tapped into viral messaging (Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Google Groups, bizM3 and Paypal). Within 10 days of starting the Facebook page they had 2,000 friends. They promoted via radio stations and newspapers. Utilization of high school students was essential to their success. The students organized their own fundraising, managed it and ran it.
At the end of 7 weeks, they presented the Fremont Unified School District a check for $700,000. They were able to hire back 6 specialty teachers who work at the elementary school level. Given more time, they feel they could have raised more money.
The unforeseen benefits of the campaign were the friendships made all across the district, created an awareness in the city about the problem which helped to pass Meausre K, a parcel tax of $13 million over 5 years for our schools, and helped to make the teachers feel valued.
There is a possibility that the parent group may work with the school district again this year.
